I am very sad to announce that Leading Note will be winding down our live music programs at the end of Term 3, 2021.

Winding down classes was not my first choice, but given the current landscape, it unfortunately has become an inevitability. Here’s a little background to provide more context to this difficult decision.

I have always thrown my heart and soul into Leading Note. Along with my team, my devotion to helping parents and their children experience truly joyful musical moments has been the driving force since day one. At last count we had supported 966 children on their musical journey, singing more than 33,000 songs along the way. I had no plans to stop. In fact, I had plans to grow Leading Note. And then 2020 happened.

Even before the first official lockdown was announced, I saw where Covid was heading and pivoted online to keep our community safe. In just 36 hours I had put all the mechanics in place to move classes from face to face to live streamed. Almost overnight, I had to become an expert in digital content creation and online marketing. It was wonderful to see our students and parents enthusiastically embrace this new digital world, and we could continue sharing the joy of music. No longer limited by location, I collected more students from far flung corners of Australia. I was upbeat. I could do this! We all could!

But this golden era didn’t last. Because despite all of our achievements, running a business in this dramatically altered world is hard.

Flip-flopping from online to offline. Making plans only for them to change in a heartbeat. But most critical of all, keeping the cash flowing without financial support from the government (unfortunately this little business fell through the gaps).

Like many small businesses operating throughout the last 18 months, the business was financially fragile. I persevered longer than my accountant would have liked. Eventually the call needed to be made. Leading Note could no longer survive on love alone.

With sadness, I am closing the door on Leading Note live classes, launching Anytime soon and starting a new chapter. I am happy that I will continue to serve the community in my new role, as I have always done with Leading Note.

To all the parents and students, it has been an absolute privilege spending time with you and getting to know your families. Thank you for staying with us through all the changes. I know for many, it was a leap of faith to stick with the program as we jumped online and I am truly thankful for your support.

Over the years, I have had the fortune of working with many talented people behind the scenes and I want to finish by thanking them for all their support:

I look forward to hearing about all the wonderful things your children get up to in the future, I know they will do amazing things!
Big hugs,
Sophie Maxwell
